South Deering is Chicago’s largest community area by landmass and one of its most unique. Located on the Southeast Side, it’s a blend of industrial zones, residential enclaves, and natural spaces. Once a hub for the steel and manufacturing industries, South Deering still retains much of its industrial character, though recent years have brought attention to its wetlands, lagoons, and forest preserves. While it faces challenges tied to economic disinvestment, South Deering remains home to a diverse population and offers one of the city’s most affordable entry points for homeownership.
